GENERAL INFO AND TIPS:
Most tattoos will weep a
little, (blood and plasma) for about 24 hours. Smaller tattoos less,
bigger tattoos more.
For the first few days it
may sting, feel sunburned or abraded,
have a localized fever, slight swelling, redness, and/or bruising. If it's
bothering you, take some aspirin.
After a day or two, the tattoo will crust
over. After a few days this crust will start to
flake and peel like a sunburn. How quick flaking starts and how long it
lasts depends on the persons skin type, health, and how well they care for
it. The tattoo may be itchy, dry and/or tight feeling.
Tattoos shouldn't scab any more than a
light crust. But if you're wearing tight clothes or clothes that rub or if
you forget to put on the aftercare product, you'll probably scab heavy and
this could hurt the tattoo. Light, loose clothing is the best thing to
wear while healing.
After two weeks, the tattoo may still look
shiny, wrinkly, and/or dry. Use a good lotion.
If you have sensitive/dry
skin, healing may take longer. It may flake more than once and the itching
could be intense.
Mild, unscented, dye free
soaps like Ivory, Lever 2000, Kirks Castile, Pure and Natural, Dove, etc.,
work best. Don't use soaps like Zest, Lava, Irish Spring, Bath and Body
Works, etc. Antibacterial soaps are worthless unless you are in a hospital
environment. Although new tests are finding that
antibacterial soaps may not contribute to bacterial resistance, Stuart B.
Levy's 2005 study does find that, "...antibacterial products for the home
are no better than plain soap-and-water.." FOXNEWS Steven Milloy,
2005.
Do not pick, rub, or scratch the tattoo.
It's going to itch. Deal with it.
No shaving the tattoo until it is 100%
healed.
NO DIRECT SUNLIGHT OR
TANNING BEDS FOR THE FIRST 30 DAYS. UV rays on a fresh
tattoo can cause scarring and fading.
Showers are fine, but don't soak or
submerge the tattoo for the first 2 weeks. You could ruin your tattoo, or,
considering how much nasty infectious crap is in hot tubs, lakes, oceans
and swimming pools, you could ruin your life.
Wash your hands with soap and water before
putting on your aftercare! Hand sanitizer does not count!
Don't cover your tattoo with plastic wrap.
Your skin can't breathe though plastic and the warm, moist atmosphere
breeds bacteria.
If your bandage sticks, get it wet before
you pull it off.
Wear old, soft clothing to bed to cover the
tattoo during flaking to keep you from scratching at it or waking up with
a bunch of skin in your bed.
Don't scrub your tattoo until your done
flaking. This means loofas, washcloths, sponges or anything but your hand.
